Chapter Six
“Are you sure about this?” Kevin asked Spencer as they walked through town, heading toward the firehouse. His feet hurt in the boots Spencer had given him to use. Kevin was ready to kick them off and walk in his socks. “I mean, what if I embarrass him by showing up at his job?”
Kevin was so nervous he felt as though he’d puke all over the place. His stomach was in knots and—as cold as it was—his palms were sweaty, and his pulse wouldn’t calm down.
In his younger days, Kevin had been outgoing. He’d laughed a lot and wasn’t afraid to make new friends. But after five years of living by himself, a lot of that outgoing shine had tarnished. On top of that, he was going to find Denver and tell the guy that he wanted to work things out.
Did Kevin want that? He was still convinced that Denver would reject him when the paramedic found out what he could do.
“Positive,” Spencer said as he pulled his coat closer over his chest. The guy was so thin that Kevin wondered if he had any meat on his bones to keep him warm. But then again, that was what his bear shifter mate was for. The guy was huge and could probably make Spencer sweat.
“You’re mates,” Spencer continued. “There’s no way he’s gonna reject you.” The impala shifter eyed Kevin as they walked. “Besides, after the miracle Kiki and I performed, Denver would have to be insane to turn you down.”
Speaking of which, his jeans were so tight that he felt like a pimple trying to be popped. He couldn’t breathe. Kevin also wasn’t sure about the snazzy boots he had on or the way Kiki had styled his hair. He didn’t do the spiky look. Why on earth had he let those two talk him into dolling himself up—Spencer’s term, not his.
Kevin was going to die of mortification. He just knew it. Not only had they messed with his clothes and hair, but he currently wore slashes of Kohl eyeliner under each eye. He felt like a strumpet.
When they reached the firehouse, Kevin paused outside the door. He couldn’t move or breathe. He wasn't sure Denver would want to see him. Why oh why had he let Spencer and Kiki turn him into something he was not? He felt like a fake, a phony. This wasn’t him. He’d rather be in a pair of baggy sweats and a T-shirt. Kevin would also rather be home instead of the verge of humiliating himself.
“I–I can’t do this.” He spun around and tried to hurry away, but Spencer grabbed him by the back of his coat and yanked him in place.
“Breathe.” Spencer patted Kevin’s chest. “You can do this.”
“No, I can’t.” Kevin glanced at the front door and swallowed roughly. There was someone sitting behind a desk, staring at the commotion outside. “I gotta go.”
This had been a bad idea. He expected someone to walk up to him at any second and ask him “How much?”
“You aren’t going anywhere, chicken.
